These are all products I would find in the Friday market (scrap market) here in Cairo. Some work, in perfect condition, some don’t but have parts that still function.
I might have changed careers and now I am a stop motion animator, but product design will always be my biggest fascination. The thought of designing something that ends up in trash saddens me the most, and the solution is not to stop creating, humans will never stop making things. But rather it’s about consuming responsibly, understanding and valuing the amount of thought, innovation and work that went into each single piece of a product, all working perfectly together, eventually hidden away inside a plastic body.
That’s why I love showing people what’s inside their things.
This video is a compilation of all four products I took apart for a series I made on Instagram; a guessing game where people tried to guess how many pieces are inside each of these. The IGTV series was sponsored by ifixit, a crowd sourced platform that educates and encourages people to fix their products.
I also love organizing my ‘Tinker Friday’ Workshop, in this workshop participants learn how to take a trashed product apart with the guidance of a product designer, they get to examine all the inner pieces and how it all works together. They then create a character of their own imagination.
Here is a workshop I gave at Pictoplasma in Berlin, Germany. It was super fun, 100 people attended it was crazy and people really enjoyed. If you’d like to host a workshop at your conference, museum, art space, school, mars… no not mars, we don’t need to take our trash to space, although we already did, yup we managed to trash the universe.
Anyways, if you’d like me to give a ‘Tinker Friday’ workshop anywhere get in touch! ✨
Lastly, but certainly not the least, a huge thank you to my Patrons who support my work and allow me to spend days taking products apart to make this. I post lots of behind the scenes of my projects on Patreon 👀
